SCSC provides live, integrated warfare systems in a maritime environment for fleet operations, testing, training, research and development. SCSC supports the Warfighter by activating, maintaining, and operating all AEGIS and Ship Self Defense System (SSDS) Combat Systems Baselines for lifetime support engineering, in-service engineering, training and interoperability testing for Strike Groups and Ballistic Missile Defense. Additionally SCSC controls live-fire operations in the Virginia Capes operating area for Combat System Ship Qualification Trials (CSSQTs).

An interesting fact about the SCSC is that it has the unique challenge of being a Navy activity on a NASA operating base. Most Navy commands are tenants on Navy installations. In this case there is a host-tenant relationship between two different agencies. While this is a unique challenge, the relationship with NASA is extremely strong because it is based on trust and good communication.
